Girl
Scout Council of the Mid-South is committed to
providing opportunities for volunteers to grow in
competency and skills, as well as their overall
understanding of the Mission and guiding principles of
Girl Scouting and the fundamentals of the Girl Scout
program.
A
wide range of training opportunities are provided in an
effort to meet the needs of our volunteers. These
opportunities are published in LeaderLine and posted here.
Training opportunities are designed to be flexible, engage
adults in active participation conflict resolution and
cooperative learning experiences.
Orientation
and training provide volunteers with an overview of the
organization as well as the knowledge, skills and
information needed to prepare them for accomplishing an
assignment.
If there is a course fee, it is
mentioned in the description. You may check with your
field executive about financial assistance if the fee
prevents you from taking a course related to your
position.
New
leaders should plan to complete both Leader Orientation
and the appropriate Age Level Training, as soon as
possible, and preferably before the troop begins to meet.
Please bring your Council Guide for Volunteers, Safety-Wise, Leaders
Guide, Age-Level Handbook and Training Card to each
training session.
All
volunteers should register for training courses. The
registration form is available at the Girl Scout Service
Center, in the LeaderLine or here in pdf
format. Registration deadline is one week prior to
the date of the training. For additional information contact Deenean
Wilson-Henderson or see links below:

Leader
Orientation
Leader
Orientation is needed before a new Girl Scout leader takes
Age Level Training. A Leader Orientation Check-List,
provided to new leaders by a member of the service team,
helps new leaders and their service team contact(s)
monitor progress through the subject matter, and when
finished serves as documentation of completion. The
checklist is especially helpful because the subjects may
be covered by one or several people, in a group or
one-on-one. Completion may take place all at once or in
several shorter sessions. Check with your service unit manager
for local options or attend one of the sessions noted in
the council calendar.
Age
Level Training
Age
Level Training is for new Girl Scout leaders/advisors and
leaders/advisors changing levels. These trainings are
divided by age level Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and
STUDIO 2B (Cadette and Senior). At least one adult from
each troop should attend the appropriate Age Level
Training as soon as possible and preferably before the
troop begins to meet. In the Age Level Training,
participants learn about age level characteristics,
girl/adult partnership and planning of troop activities,
as well as age appropriate activities, troop budgeting and
ways that families and the community can support the
troop.
Arts
& Crafts Tidbits
This
is a great opportunity to learn from an arts and crafts
expert and get some "make it and take it"
hands-on experience. You will leave with handouts,
resources and plenty of age appropriate project ideas to
share with your troop! Adults, Program Aides and
Leaders-in-Training are welcome to attend.
Financial Fitness
Financial Fitness is an
important responsibility that should be shared by girls
and adults. This informative, user-friendly course is
designed to prepare leaders for the challenge of
managing troop funds during the Girl Scout program year.
You will learn how to plan and successfully involve
girls and their families in earning and spending their
funds to carry out the troop's activities.
Safety-Wise policies, standards and guidelines will
be used to provide guidance on basic money management.
Girl Scouts Go Green - NEW
Did you know?
-
For every ton of paper that is recycled, the
following is saved: 7,000 gallons of water; 380
gallons of oil; and enough electricity to power an
average house for six months.
-
You can run a TV for six hours on the amount of
electricity that is saved by recycling one aluminum
can.
-
By
recycling just one glass bottle, you save enough
electricity to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours.
Beginning in January with the help of
our
friends at Lichterman Nature Center, Girl Scouts will
offer Go Green enrichment training to provide Girl
Scouts with simple, practical ways to adopt a greener
way of life. This new enrichment training will help you
help girls acquire new habits that have a direct and
positive effect on the way we choose to recycle, reuse,
reduce and restore our natural resources. Its easy to
be green!
